Convolutional Neural Networks employ the mathematical concept of convolution to simulate the neural connectivity lattice of the visual cortex in biological systems. Convolution can be viewed as a sliding window over top a matrix representation of an image. This allows for the simulation of the overlapping tiling of the visual field.
